There is such a fuss over Fox News-style TV network being assembled by Quebec billionaire Pierre Karl Péladeau. Some reports imply the end of Canada is near.
Well, let's see what the new network is like before attacking it.
Canada can use another national news voice and it's perfectly legitimate for it to be conservative leaning. A right-of-centre cable offering is hardly cause for anxiety -- in fact, it shows a healthy political environment -- a media that is only liberal or conservative is no guardian of freedom.
Moreover, all news media has a bias -- even if it's merely a bias by selection. So, if reporting is totally neutral but focusses entirely on poverty there is a bias, albeit discrete. Thus CBC and CTV have a bias too.
Let's see what comes.

I wonder how the citizens of Quebec who read the Journal de Montreal will react to Quebecor running this conservative flagship against them.
I expect that to get some media play soon.
And I do love the irony of a Quebec based firm running the anti Quebec conservative show.
It is but to laugh, no?
'Some reports imply the end of Canada is near.'
And that is exactly why we need a competing network to CBC and CTV!
Robertson, Mansbridge, Newman and all the other OLD network hosts that have been lulling Canadians to sleep for 20 years!
The 75% of us who don't vote Liberal are BORED,
bored with decades of Liberal infighting being the 'top story'.
Bored with 'when will the next election be'.....
Time that Dippers and Greens got some air time too!
The only time the NDP is mentioned is if there is a Liberal in the story.
Time for 5 'regional' leaders debates, not just 2.
Let's hear what every leader's vision or position is on 'regional' issues,
not just Ontario and Quebec.
Let's hear the leaders debate the oilsands, not just do fly over's or make some comment about enviro legislation.
It's a big YOUNG country, but you'd never know it tuning into our nightly dose of what 'Liberal sources say'.

Um.. okay Wilson. Your phone bill must be high from phoning all Canadians...
There was no uproar over Al Jazeera's planned move into Canada so why should this be such a problem? Clearly, some people and the media don't want Canadians to get a different viewpoint. I don't think anyone has problems with networks having a bias or direction but I definately don't want public money to pay for it.
Al Jazeera and CBC are neutral.
This new "channel" is pure propaganda.
It will only serve to poison the political discourse even more with lies and outright fabrications.
That is the difference.
For what it's worth I agree that no media is completely unbiased. As James points out even the selection of what to include or exclude often represents bias.
As this is a private venture, the only voice the public has that matters is if it doesn't capture enough audience, it won't be attractive to advertisers and thus economically a failure. A point which could be highlighted if it is a separate publicly traded entity and that information is available.
If it turns out to be a Fox North, I expect it will receive an appropriate amount of scorn. Anne Coulter hasn't been back.
James, you are right. You have to understand that the left want total media control. They are going nuts at the very thought of a conservative news channel.
Its amusing to read how insecure the left is over this new news channel.
They feel threatened. They will not be able to dictate news feed and spin.
