Toronto mayoral race poll: it doesn’t matter where you start, it’s where you finish.

First the numbers:

Ford: 17.8%
Smitherman: 15.9%
Pantalone: 10.1%
Rossi: 9.0%
Thomson: 5.8%

With about 40% undecided.

What's it mean?

Well, most clearly Smitherman is in serious trouble. As the "front runner" he should be in the 20% range and certainly not second to Ford.

That said it is early days still and no one is running away with the race. Any of the top five can win.

Rossi (who I support) has momentum and his support is growing despite the entry of a new candidate in April. My sense is he will be the guy running against the survivor of Ford/Smitherman (as between the two it's a toss up).

Ford is doing very well -- he has struck a chord with Toronto voters who want change -- but he probably doesn't have a lot of growth potential.

Pantalone is in the running but, as deputy mayor, his numbers are too low. He should have the Miller supporters and be a leading contender. Perhaps there are no Miller supporters?

Speaking of the poll Rossi said,"I am very happy with these results. It is very much a race. Our campaign strategy from the beginning has been slow and steady wins the race. This poll shows our plan is working. We are the only campaign showing real growth. We will continue to work hard and offer voters a real alternative to the same old, same old."

Rossi noted that with more than four months until election day, "As an Italian kid from Main and Danforth I learned at an early age from my parents that it doesn't matter where you start in life, it's where you finish."

Ford the frontrunner? I'm suddenly glad I live in York region.

OMG, that's what he thinks matters in life, where you finish? Then this guy really needs to learn more about life.

Actually, in an election campaign, where you end is what counts the most. It does help that Rossi is somewhere in the middle/upper middle.

Rossi needs to become more of a liberal candidate and less of a conservative one. He does need to become more of a community candidate and less of the Toronto Board of Trade candidate. By being a community based liberal candidate, Rossi can should that he is pragmatic economically and socially. Rossi's original campaign speeches made him seem like a right-wing tyrant.

"Rossi's original campaign speeches made him seem like a right-wing tyrant."

I'd replace tyrant with moron, but he's definitely right-wing on all the wrong issues, which makes him unfit to be mayor of the city I call home. But alas, we're still in the of age conservatism, so I expect one of the idiot candidates to become mayor before we toss the neo-liberal economic model, social conservatism and corporatocracy on the rubbish heap of history.

The next 5-10 years or so promise to be one wild ride.

Morton has deliberately misled his readers into believing that there are only five candidates for mayor.

A visit to the city of Toronto's website will give you the names of more than 30 upright citizens who think they can do the job.

If you do not possess the independence of mind or just can't be bothered to decide for yourself who to vote for, then Morton's your man, because he will tell you without hesitation.

On the other hand, if Morton and his ilk's insistence that you should vote for their favourites seems a little fishy to you, then just log into the City of Toronto website and look over the more than 30 possibilities of Torontonians who want to lead your city from its CEO position.

http://app.toronto.ca/vote2010/findByOffice.do?officeType=1&officeName=Mayor

Most of them have websites you can check out to see what they stand for. And some of them are head and shoulders above Morton's faves in terms of quality, leadership, and vision.
