Staying on in Kabul?

My thought always was there would be an extension to the mission -- albeit called something else. Remember Korea was a 'police' operation and not a war ... .

HALIFAX—The Harper government is thinking about a proposal to keep hundreds of Canadian troops in Afghanistan until 2014 in a training role.

Sources tell The Canadian Press they expect Prime Minister Harper to decide soon whether to send up to 600 troops to Kabul to train Afghan troops.

The Canadian personnel would not be involved in combat operations, but their role would continue until 2014.

That would extend Canada’s military presence in Afghanistan three years past the end of the combat mission next July.

I assume that there will be a vote in the house on this extension, since it was a house vote that decided the original withdrawal date.
It will be a done deal anyway, since Iggy has called for this type of extension.

All the conditions of the 2009 extension agreement will be met.
-out of Kandahar
-end of combat mission

Cabinet has to approve the 'new' non-combat mission before PMSH takes the decision to the UN.

Ig/Rae have made the Liberal position crystal clear, support for staying on in a training pnly capacity.

PMSH has never 'needed' the approval of the House to make any military decision,
that was and is 100% a Cabinet decision.
Remember the House got a take note debate only when the Martin govt decided our troops were moving out of Kabul and into combat in Kandahar province.
