Sarah Palin -- something of a fishy past ...

The more I see of McCain's choice the more I see method in what might seem madness.

First the timing. The day after the big Obama speech. A speech that got fairly low ratings. And Palin was big news and news that leaked early in the day and took the media spotlight on the Friday night after the Obama speech. A speech that seems to have been met with no poll bump. The Palin announcement took the wind out of Obama's sails.

Second the candidate. An attractive back story, a popular governor and better still someone who, the second Democratics criticized, Republics were able to counter with claims of putting down someone because she's a woman. Hillary supporters may not like all of Palin's ideas bit they may her strength and will to succeed. They may also like her bipartisan approach -- her cabinet contains Democrats and Independents.

But now a bizarre story; it shows Palin has a fishy past. Here's the first media hit with quotations from Palin. It appeared in the April 3, 1996, issue of the Anchorage Daily News. Here is the excerpt, quoted directly:

"Sarah Palin, a commercial fisherman from Wasilla, told her husband on Tuesday she was driving to Anchorage to shop at Costco. Instead, she headed straight for Ivana.

And there, at J.C. Penney's cosmetic department, was Ivana, the former Mrs. Donald Trump, sitting at a table next to a photograph of herself. She wore a light-colored pantsuit and pink fingernail polish. Her blonde hair was coiffed in a bouffant French twist.

'We want to see Ivana,' said Palin, who admittedly smells like salmon for a large part of the summer, 'because we are so desperate in Alaska for any semblance of glamour and culture.'"

Six months later, Palin was elected mayor of Wasilla, using the slogan "A Time for a Change.""

That's classic. I guess even fisherwomen in Alaska need a little makeup and glam from time to time. Looking at her now, it's hard to picture her fishing... her story is actually incredible.

Morton, Palin would crush Dion as a leader.

It's amazing how partisan you have become since Harper wants an election.

If Canada was a quarter of the country America is, maybe a woman could become P.M.

Did you ever wonder why America is the superpower and the cultural leader in the world, while Canada is seen as irrelevant.

Morton, are you jealous that Canada relies on America for YOUR way of life.

Without America Morton, you would have nothing.

it's time to grow up champ and quit bashing the only country in the world that gives you the life you enjoy.

If you think I'm crazy, think about what would happen if you take 70% of the GDP out of Canada.

You would be on welfare Morton.

You should be praising the USA for giving YOU the quality of life YOU enjoy.

What would Canada be without the USA?

Bulgaria, Lativa or Ukraine?

You choose.

When you bash the USA Morton, it shows your ignorance.

And jealousy.

Even if all of which you noted is true, what does it have to do with the story Morton posted?

On the subject though, If Palin wasn't such a rabid red meat conservative and not from the random far away state of Alaska, maybe she would be the one claiming Obama's thunder and running for the highest office in the land. Instead, she's now the butt end of jokes and criticism about McCain's ridiculously badly run campaign and terrible judgment.

I'm sorry but I have to ask.

Where did you hear that Obama's speech got "low ratings."

If you are talking about quality, a number of folks, including hardened analysts on both sides of the political spectrum spoke glowingly of the speech.

Secondly, it is estimated over 40 million, and by some estimates nearly 45 million, watched the speech last night.

By comparison, that is twice as many people who watched Kerry's acceptance speech and over 15 million more than watched Bush's speech.

What gives?

And about this "no bump" comment.

Gallup tracking shows an increase of 8 points in two days - PRIOR to Obama's speech - from a tie showing on the tracking release on Wednesday to an 8 point lead this morning. Results that include the poll being taken after his speech will be released tomorrow morning.

Rasmussen in their 3-day tracking showed McCain up 1 point as of Wednesday morning, and today showed Obama up 4 points (a 5 point swing on two nights of polls). And, again, most all of the polling was completed last evening PRIOR to Obama's speech.

Where did you read or hear your news prior to this post? Rush Limbaugh?

I thought that you would know better than that James. "Bumps" don't appear immediately. They rise over a period of a few days.

As far as Palin goes she is ant-abortion, anti-gay rights & is HUGE on oil drilling. She is an extreme right-winger & as refreshing as she "appears" to be she has zero experience in foreign affairs or Washington.

Not a good choice in the long run as who knows how the health of McCain will be. I would not like to see her become Prez if McCain were elected & became ill, or worse. You can imagine what the Supreme Court would look like if she had the power to submit her choices.

Just my take.

Jeez, I am anti-US, pro-McCain, radical left and lots of other stuff all in one! Whatever -- my understanding of the bump and the low ratings came from Global and 680News; I agree the bump may not show for a day or two (perhaps); but I say this, Palin has pre-empted Obama brilliantly -- look at the US papers, Chic Sun Times, NY Times, Buff News etc.

By the way, while I think Bush has been a disaster, I like the USA and do think Canada is very fortunate to have them as a neighbor.

Anon - who's partisan here? Look in the mirror.

Ah, we did have a woman PM - Kim Campbell.

Ah, Morton was not bashing the US - he was discussing Palin.

Ah, US superpowerdom is coming to a close....think China buddy.

Ah, why is there a need to be a superpower? How about a happy, democratic country being okay.

Ah, jealous of the US? What's to be jealous of? They don't have any more than we have when it comes to a democracy and quality of life, in fact, there are areas where Canada is better.

Anon - are you Jonathan aka many other names...spewing hatred all over the blogosphere again - well, guess what you are being watched dude.....be careful.

Mor Morton - for your info:

It seems that the commenter Johnathon, under another name which is Tom Robinson, has uttered physical violence threats at CDLU's blog. This follows some terrible vandalism & the cutting of brake lines to a no. of cars at the homes of Liberal supporters. They have Lib signs on their lawns.

Here is a comment from someone at the same blog & post that I think is appropriate:

"Every incidence of commentary such as the above from "Tom Robinson" (ie Johnathan) should be forwarded to both the local police, local crown council office and the RCMP. Do not delete them - just forward the comment and the link. IP information can be gleaned from the ISP and follow up can be done. Any blog receiving such should forward them as well. This individual is clearly unbalnced and could well prove to be a danger to others."

And here is "johnathon/Tom Robinson's"
