We need a new leader now

After the election I sat down with various community leaders to ask what they thought the Liberal Party needed to do to win in my Riding.

Almost everyone said 'there's no rush -- the next election is at least 18 months away' (in fairness one person said there would be an election in January but I thought he was wrong).

Well, almost everyone was wrong.

I don't know what is going to happen in the next week but for certain we are already fighting the next election now.

And so we need a leader now.

Dion is leader in name only now. Whether he stays on for a while he does not have the support of caucus or, bluntly, membership.

Waiting now until May creates a vacuum that helps the Conservatives and hurts Canada as a whole.

Let's keep the May convention but have it as a confirmation of whom ever is appointed by the Party apparatus now.

My support is for Michael Ignatieff. I see him as a man of principle and great intellect who is a political centrist. The other candidates are also solid but now is a time for a sensible and moderate leader.

Mr Morton.. it looks as if the Liberals have done the honourable thing.

Mike Duffy reporting that the leadership candidates after meeting with Dion today have agreed that the coalition deal are good terms.. they are all unanimously recommending it to Liberal caucus and unanimously recommending Dion stay on as interim leader/Prime Minister til May.

If that's the case.. I'm pleased to see the candidates put "country above party".. or in this case, "country above their personal ambitions".

Mr Dion is the leader elected by convention, and is the leader until the new one is chosen by convention, or he resigns (which he will not).

The caucus today unanimously reaffirmed its support for Mr Dion to continue as leader until a new leader is chosen.

Your support for Michael Ignatieff while admirable is mistaken. Mr. Dion is the leader. The very fact he could bring this coalition about in the first place demonstrates what a truly great leader he is. It is now time for you, and other Iggy supporters, to rally behind Mr. Dion to make this coalition work. Even the guy you claim to support is doing this.

That is stunning in its absence of wisdom.

Hey,
your prolific posts are occasionally amusing, sometimes spot-on, usually not worth pausing over.

But your call here is non-sense.

Our leader is an experienced cabinet minister and Parliamentarian.

It ain't time for a recently returned ex-pat to take on the big job.
