Hate crimes -- good news

It's a good thing that hate crime motivated by religion are down. It's also good to see that the total number of hate crime reported is, in comparison with the ordinary flood of crimes, is minor.

That said, it is curious that two-thirds of such crimes as continue to be committed, are committed against Jews, a trivial minority of the Canadian population.

From the Globe:

"There were 185 religiously-motivated incidents in 2007, down from 220 in 2006. There were fewer incidents targeting Jews and Muslims. Incidents against Jews continued to account for about two-thirds of all hate crimes motivated by religion. "

"Nothing more than swastikas"??? Who is this guy? Those are hate-crimes.

It is a sad state to see Canada's multicultural, multi-ethnic population being assaulted by the hate-mongers - and government that wishes to hide their dirty deeds behind so-called "freedom of speech".

Perhaps it is time to change Canada's human rights activism back to what it was in the 70s - we have just the leader to do so. The hate crimes are deplorable and need addressing. When we stop talking about it publicly, it stops being an issue. When the government stops talking about it, the issue falls into the hands of agencies which this government chooses NOT to fund, or to underfund. It has become too easy to talk about people's "right" to spout hate - even though there is no such right in a civilized society.

Calgary still ranks as the hate-crime capital of Canada by the way. That jives with the prevailing political sway of that town...

I agree hate crime are hate crime -- but property damage, though hurtful, is less serious than the bashing I remember from my youth. I still say it is troubling that Jews attract such special attention.

I would suggest that better reporting and recording by the various Jewish groups would account for this statistical oddity. If a hate crime occurs, and no one reports or records it, has it happened?

Doz, Good point -- this may be nothing more than a selection effect
