Sentencing guidelines

In the United States judges have sentencing guidelines. They may be set too high (that's another issue) but they are consistent, known and apply across the full range of crimes.

If we really are moving towards mandatory sentencing in Canada then let's stop doing it piecemeal based on what's hot in the press -- proper, uniform and full sentencing guidelines should be put in place.

Well, if you elect judges, it would seem appropriate that you need sentencing guidelines. They aren't necessarily competent judges, just winners of popularity contests. The conservatives seem to think that Canadian judges cant judge. The point should be to let judges judge, rather than institute a system that plays into the conservative ideal of popularizing and politicizing the justice system.
