I don't see this as plausible -- the NDP and the Liberals are both to the left of the Conservatives, but we are hardly the same. My sense is that a 'partnership' of the left would be an uneasy one at best (of course, how the right manages to bring libertarians and social conservatives together amazes me):

We already know this James. The coalition hobbled together last year lasted less than a week. The result? The Libs turfed their leader (even though the entire caucus signed a letter stating they supported him leading the country) and coronated a new one.
Sorry, but I disagree. However,if most Libs and NDPers think like you, we are in for a few more years of Harper minority govts.
Obama was told he would never get his Healthcare bill passed, wasn't he?
The 'left' is getting what they deserve. On many occasions, I've reached out to various people in different parties and they quickly descend into 'territory' and 'we're right, you're wrong'.
It's excessively frustrating, because I'm sure there are ways that the left can put together a Constitutionally binding plan to pursue a 'truce' in various ridings or find a way to avoid stepping on each other's toes.
Canada's future is riding on this and they're busy twiddling their thumbs.
I've even suggested a new party that would capture the spirit of all 'progressive' sentiments, but that went nowhere because the in-fighting emerged nearly instantly.
Only when people are truly ticked off and the Cons have taken everything from us will we see action. Prove me wrong.
I agree.
I suspect many people who have voted Liberal in the past would abandon the party if it were to swing too much to the left.
The comparison with the Conservatives is not apt. In this month's Literary Review of Canada, Andrew Potter points out how Canada's social and fiscal conservatives have long lived together. Their separation during the 1990s was more like a trail separation than representing a serious fissure.
Many in the NDP are as opposed to the Liberals as they are to the Conservatives, seeing both as equally as bad. I disagree. But I’m not in the NDP.
