On television when a commercial involves a judge they often wear a wig and pound a gavel -- something that doesn't happen in real life as British judges wear wigs but don't use gavels and American judges use gavels but don't wear wigs. In Canada our judges use neither.
It's odd how the symbols of a judge are not really related to judging; certainly, few scientists have the hair of Einstein.
I suppose the symbols have some evocative pull on the psyche and so survive?
