During the #G20 weekend, and even today, I have received tweets that repeat horrific stories (missed by mainstream media). I have tried to track down the roots of each.
Sometimes the root was a person who corresponded with me -- and usually their stories were credible and troubling. (And showed rude and likely illegal conduct by police).
But often the root was a new twitter whose trail started three or four days ago and who had a handful of tweets before a tweet describing something horrific (and implausible). That tweet was then retweeted so often as to give it credibility.
There's a lot of fake stories floating around out there... .

More than enough for a slanderous headline with none of that nagging verification hassle.
Seriously, this is where the media needs to ask those other questions instead of simply running with unsubstantiated fluff.
Why has the mainstream media stayed fairly quiet on these stories, even though their own people were arrested?
For balance, sometimes you need to find an alternative POV.

The trouble with traditional media is that anyone (in traditional media) can say anything. Is it really true? Often, it is not.
What is Steve Paikin just making it all up, now? What about sexual assault and threats by the Toronto police reported by Amy Miller?
Your article today was a disgrace.

What makes certain selected people more credible than others, in your view? Do you really need to run every statement through your notoriously left-wing filter before you can deign to accept it?
I can do the same. I can count the number of blog posts you have made regarding Israel, noting how many actually support Israel (none, of course). Then I look for posts about *real* humanitarian emergencies, mass starvations, massacres and outright genocides actually happening right now around the world (gee, what a surprise: NONE). From this I can reasonably conclude that you are an anti-Semite, can't I? If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck?...

Right. Calling for a balanced approach and actually investigating (gasp!) the source of rumors is "a disgrace" to you, is it? Oh, THE HORROR!
No wonder so many people laugh at you, Baglow.
Oh, Freddy. Let's not tell fibs, OK?
Morton's article was a disgrace because it completely ignored a number of credible reports of police brutality and violations of Charter rights.
Ask the National Post and Sun reporters who got hassled or arrested, if you don't like "left-wing" sources. And Paikin's own credibility is above reproach.
"Actually investigating?" Not really. The president of the CCLA, the former dean of law at the University of Ottawa IIRC, differs sharply with Morton. There are far too many accounts coming out that buttress her position. In fairness to James, though, he might have written his op-ed before a lot of this was public.
And what the hell does Israel have to do with any of this? I didn't label James, in any case--I disagreed with him. I leave ad hominem to screaming meemies like Fred.

Oh, Johnny. Seeing you lecture anyone else about honesty is the ultimate irony.

'Credible' to whom? You? You seem to have missed the entire point of his post, but that doesn't surprise me at all.

Already made my views clear on other blogs. I have no sympathy for any reporters (left or right) who think they are 'special' and can ignore police instructions and cross any lines they want any time they want.
And Paikin's own credibility is above reproach.
Hilarious. And "the science is settled" and "the debate is over"?
Why...because you say so?
"Actually investigating?" Not really. The president of the CCLA, the former dean of law at the University of Ottawa IIRC, differs sharply with Morton.
That's nice. So what? Oh, right...I forgot. There's no room for dissent out on the far-left fringe you inhabit, is there?
There are far too many accounts coming out that buttress her position.
And all from people who share the same political viewpoints. How convenient.
In fairness to James, though, he might have written his op-ed before a lot of this was public.
Yes. Or he could simply have been playing 'devil's advocate', since so many others were taking the easy way out and parroting the Party Line (like you, John). But I note with much amusement that you have once again put your mouth in motion before putting your brain in gear. Once again you throw out an accusation or insult, then think better of it afterward; first you call his post "a disgrace", THEN start talking about "fairness"?
Your whole blog reads like that. Never have I seen so many 'edits' or 'updates' in one place. Why not do what the rest of us do, and don't jump to conclusions before all the facts are in? Or do you actually enjoy backpedalling and covering your ass every time you make a stupid, unsupportable statement out of sheer ignorance and unwillingness to check your facts?
And what the hell does Israel have to do with any of this?
It speaks to your character (or in your case, your *lack* of character), and reinforces my point about your habitual dishonesty. Don't try to tell me that you don't know how this game is played.
I didn't label James, in any case--I disagreed with him.
Yeah...by calling his post a disgrace. Nicely done, genius.
I leave ad hominem to screaming meemies like Fred.
Except when you're tossing out accusations of racism or homophobia, right John?
I repeat: you're a joke. You were a joke when you were getting your ass kicked daily on UseNet, and you're a joke now.
