Christians in China
Attacks on unregistered Churches in China are not very surprising. China today has around 100,000,000 Christians and the faith is growing at 5 to 7 per cent annually. China's government has maintained itself by a strict control of public ideology and a largely hands off approach to the economy. Christianity is a legal faith in China -- and indeed registered Catholic Churches are very publicly seen in Beijing -- but unregistered (generally Protestant) Churches pose an ideological alternative the Chinese government cannot allow. Muslims face similar, perhaps more intense, religious oppression in the west of China.

This is the country Ignatieff says we can learn a few things from on human rights? When CSIS said foreign governments were influencing politicians they meant China. How many ex-politicians in Canada have become lobbyists for business in China? Is it a coincidence that Chretien is often in China? Is it a coincidence that people like Maurice Strong have made fortunes over there? Or is it simply that China offers the best retirement package to ex-pols?
I am quite serious when I question China's influence in the Liberal party of Canada.
