I prayed for twenty years but received no answer until I prayed with my legs. Frederick Douglass
This quotation is quite consistent with Douglass' view (being a slave who took his freedom for himself) that it is action that counts. In this sense Douglass was a foreshadowing of Malcolm X. Another quotation of Frederick Douglass reads:
"One and God make a majority."
He didn't have much time for "pray and wait" for deliverance.
