"Parliament probably has more than the average cases of depression and other mood disorders because of the kind of people who are attracted to politics and the challenging lifestyle it requires. A typical politician's life is filled with exactly the kind of conditions that can create depression: long hours, isolation from family, too many social functions, not enough exercise or healthy food and — not least of all — the endless, withering criticism. "
Gosh, this clip from the Star sounds like more than just a political life!!!

Yeah and apparently 2 cabinet ministers are suffering from depression --- the news there is that the entire cabinet isn't having had to endure Harper for all these years.
I really feel sorry for them. All they have to do is stick it out for five years and they get a huge pension...isn't that why they take the job in the first place?
not to belittle the serious condition of depression but - another component of life in politics - that of having to start bull s*i*ting, twisting the truth, talking on both sides of their mouths.. could certainly add to the malaise of those with ethics and integrity under their expected public facades.
