A nation divided by an election

The May 2 general election had more surprises than most voters realized. In our democracy, most Canadians voted to deny Prime Minister Stephen Harper a majority? No one warned that the Liberal party faced abject humiliation and imminent bankruptcy? Can New Democrats really rejoice at promotion to official Opposition? Can they possibly retain close to a million Quebec voters?

yeah, too bad some Liberals ended up splitting the centre-left vote and ended up electing more Cons. WTG!

There are always winners and losers in elections. People will generally vote to protect what is in their best interest.

Bottom line. The Liberals pulled the trigger and got thumped. If the worst case scenario(for the Libs) was a Conservative majority then why did the Libs provide them with the only pathway for them to get one? No election equals no majority. They had more than 2 years before an election was forced.

The Libs grossly misread the electorate. They deserved what they got.

Laughable, Liberals got what they earned and deserved.

Well looks like we need a different voting system and there will be no majority!!!!!

I think the point here is that they system does not reflect the popular will. Changing that will be hard because the party in power (who can make the changes) will always favour the system that got them there. I still think the article is a good one.

I've thought about what I said above and I admit I was completely wrong. The Liberals fell pray to attack ads. If Harper's government hadn't been charged with contempt of parliament there would have been no election. Maybe it was all Harper's plan.

I apologize for speaking like an insensitive idiot. Next time I'll read up before I comment. Sorry.
