Police to enforce ‘move over’ law this long weekend

The slow down and drive with caution is just common sense but a lot of drivers do not know that if the road has more than one lane, motorists are required to move over a lane.

On top of the usual holiday enforcement campaigns, provincial police will be out in force this Civic long weekend reminding drivers about the "Move Over" law.

It requires drivers to slow down and proceed with caution when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the side of the highway with its lights activated.

If the highway has more than one lane, motorists are required to move over a lane.

The fine for breaking the "Move Over" law ranges from $400 to $2,000.

Fine and dandy but sometimes "moving over" isn't really safe. Especially when the highway is busy. You get so paranoid that you muscle your way into the other lane.

I know a guy who didn't move over and was ticketed. While he was being ticketed another motorist was caught doing the same thing.

In other words the cops were nabbing motorists for not moving over while giving tickets for not moving over. And 'round it went.

It was a sting.
