Merger talk is "fiction"

Liberal leader Bob Rae is moving to quell any talk of a potential merger with the New Democratic Party, dismissing the current wave of speculation as mere “fiction.”

Asked on Tuesday about the renewed commentary about an NDP-Liberal merger, Rae said: “Is it a debate about something real? My answer is No. I’m not running a political seminar here. I’m running a political party that’s looking at real issues in front of it.”

The merger talk has gained new momentum since the death of NDP leader Jack Layton last week, which has left Canada’s two main opposition parties with interim leaders.

When one reporter asked, in French, whether Rae was leaving the door open to merger possibilities, the interim Liberal leader replied: “There is no door.”

Rae said that the Liberals have to keep their sights instead on fighting the Conservatives’ plans for the economy, which he sums up simply as “a forced march to austerity.”

Everything that comes out of Rae's mouth tends to be fiction.

Reality check; People are talking about a merger from both parties and Rae can do little to stop it.

There needs to be an organized grass-roots effort to force this issue. People need to get together and start organizing this. A strong grass roots organization can force this issue. It can be organized online, if need be; indeed, it can be organized very well online. It would be a force to be reckoned with ... in both leadership races. And ultimately it would be a force that would win!
