If Ford is indeed ousted, council must formally declare his seat vacant. Council would then have 60 days to choose between a byelection or an appointment. The byelection would be a mere 45 days — much shorter than the nearly year-long campaign that preceded Ford’s October 2010 victory — but would still cost taxpayers $7 million.
So what will they do? My guess, and it is a guess, is they will avoid an election. That way Council will choose who they want and can claim to be saving money by so doing...
